Hi Sonia
I want to say something today that I think a lot of people over 50 need to hear.
Food is not the enemy.
Somewhere along the way — through decades of diet culture, conflicting advice, and plans that made eating feel like a chore — many of us developed a complicated, exhausting relationship with food.
We feel guilty after certain meals. We label foods as "good" or "bad." We restrict, then overindulge, then feel worse about ourselves. We approach eating with anxiety instead of enjoyment.
And it's exhausting. It's supposed to be.
Because here's the truth: food is nourishment. It's pleasure. It's connection. It's one of life's genuine joys — and you are allowed to experience it that way.
Healthy eating after 50 doesn't have to mean white-knuckling your way through bland meals and saying no to everything you love. It means finding a way of eating that nourishes your body, feels sustainable, and actually enjoyable.
That looks different for everyone — but some things that help:
Eat foods you genuinely like. Healthy food that you enjoy is infinitely more sustainable than "perfect" food you dread. Find the nourishing foods that you actually look forward to.
Stop labeling food as good or bad. Some foods nourish you more than others — that's true. But one meal, one treat, one celebration doesn't undo anything. Consistency over time is what matters, not perfection.
Eat slowly and with intention. When you slow down and actually taste your food, you enjoy it more and you're more satisfied with less.
Give yourself permission. Permission to enjoy a meal out. Permission to have dessert sometimes. Permission to be human.
The goal has never been perfection. It's been feeling good — and you deserve that without the guilt.
Warmly,
Sonia
